Grammar Notes: As you see, because direct object pronouns precede the verb of which they are the object, the agreement rule for avoir-type past participle constructions comes into effect. (Reference Grammar, 6.2.1a). It is worth noting also that the direct object pronoun precedes the auxiliary (ai, a, avons, etc.) because the passé composé is a two-part verb, not two separate verbs.

    Exercice II

Prepare ten questions that you will ask fellow students and/or your instructor, of the type: Whom did you give/send X to? Whom are you going to sell X to? When are you going to buy X? When did you send X to your brother? Those are just suggestions: do not be limited by them and do not try to translate them.

    Verbs you might use:

vendre acheter donner envoyer faire boire
dire raconter finir ouvrir fermer chercher

For other verbs and a variety of nouns, see the vocabularies in the Intégration units. Be sure to choose verbs that regularly take a direct object or an indirect object, as appropriate for the kind of question you decide to ask. In most cases, you can tell by the meaning whether or not the verb takes a direct (or indirect) object. Check the Reference Grammar, Section 27.3, for problem cases.

Of course, always be ready with an answer for each of your questions.

    VOIR, to see

Je vois mon ami. I see my friend.
Tu le vois. You see him (it).
Elle voit la lune. She sees the moon.
Nous voyons les étoiles. We see the stars.
Vous voyez pourquoi? Do you see why?
Ils voient la Tour Eiffel. They see the Eiffel Tower.
    Passé composé: j'ai vu, ...
    Imparfait: je voyais, ...
Futur: je verrai, ... Futur proche: je vais voir, ...
