Students pursuing two years of college-level French can spend as much as $1,000 on textbooks and publisher access codes across the four-course sequence. For many, that cost is more than just a number—it creates real challenges around equity, access, and overall success.
As community college faculty who regularly teach these courses in both Northern and Southern California, we see every semester how expensive materials affect our students. High costs can discourage enrollment, make it harder for students to stay in the sequence, and force them to choose between buying books and covering everyday essentials.
Our project aims to change that. We are creating open-access French resources designed with community college students in mind. Available on LibreTexts, these materials give instructors the freedom to:
- remix content to fit their teaching style,
- customize lessons to reflect their students and institutions, and

easily integrate everything into Canvas or other learning platforms.
What is Avant-Première ?
Avant-Première is an intermediate & advanced French OER manual for second language learners at the college level. Instructors will be able to download the entire manual as well as the H5P activities library, or use the OER Remixer from LibreTexts to adapt, edit, and customize content for publication in their LMS.
Each unit of Avant-Première is centered on a single film and equips students with the tools to not only discuss the movie, but also practice the vocabulary and grammar needed to understand it and explore its themes within a broader cultural context. Through recent French and Francophone films paired with carefully curated readings, multimedia activities and self-graded grammar exercises using H5P, Avant-Première supports students in expanding their vocabulary, strengthening their grammar, practicing communication skills and deepening their understanding of French and Francophone life and cultures.
Avant-Première was conceived as an Open Educational Resource. The manual is designed in HTML, one of the most accessible formats available. We made intentional design choices to keep the content user-friendly and accessible. That said, LibreTexts and H5P activities still have some limitations.
