The web version of this OER textbook has been updated to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, level AA, including:
- Easy navigation. This resource has a linked table of contents and uses headings in each chapter to make navigation easy.
- Accessible images. All images in this resource that convey information have alternative text. Images that are decorative have empty alternative text.
- Accessible links. All links use descriptive link text.

Known Accessibility Issues and Areas for Improvement
- Long alt-text: Some images may have alt-text that is more than 150 characters. Descriptions are based on the content or what is needed to complete exercises containing images.
- Headings: Libretexts uses H5 for exercises boxes, so sometimes headings may not be sequential. However, there is a table of contents button for each page that has all page items in correct order.
- Readability: Some of the readings are linked to other webpages, and the accessibility of those webpages cannot be confirmed. Also, as this textbook is for advanced ESL learners, articles at a C1 or C2 level may be too difficult. Efforts will be made to replace copyrighted articles with CC licensed ones and articles with C1 or C2 readings levels will be adjusted to be at a B2 level without reducing too much of the authenticity of the articles.
- Tables for images: Unfortunately, to align images better for printing, tables were used for layout. Thus, these tables do not have headers or captions. For these tables, they are usually one row and three columns, with alt-text and a caption in the cell. Exercises may have up to 6 images in a table.
- Tables in exercises: Sometimes the exercises involve filling in information in a table, and thus may have blank cells. All blank cells means information is missing from the table. These tables will have a header row but no caption. Exercise instructions will warn that a chart or table is coming up.
- Vocabulary building H5P exercises: The H5Ps themselves should be fine for screen reader navigation, but the exercises require finding the keyword from a specific paragraph. Paragraphs are not labeled in the articles in this version of the textbook, so these exercises might be difficult for those using a screen reader.
Accessibility Features in LibreText
- Reader Mode: Simplifies the look of the page so focus is easier.
- Readability Tab: Can change the text color, which can help with focus. Enlarge text and margin size. Enable dyslexic font.
