After reading the speech, answer the following questions:
1. What is the purpose of the piece?
2. Look at the first paragraph. Why does he begin the speech with this information? What does he want the audience to think/feel about the history of immigration? Point to specific places within the introduction where he does this.
3. What verb tense does he use most often in the introduction? Why is this verb tense used here?
4. Look at the last sentence of the introduction. How does the language shift? What affect does it have on the audience? How does it set up the rest of the speech/argument?
