We use infinitives in the following situations:
1. In ‘It is ....’ expressions
- It is difficult for my mother to ride a bike.
- [=Riding a bike is difficult for my mother.]
- It is great not to get up early.
- [=Not getting up early is great.]
2. After some verbs
- She wants to go shopping in San Francisco.
- He needed to study before the test.
3. After some adjectives
- I am prepared to take the next test.
- She is afraid to lose her job.
- [=She is afraid of losing her job.]
4. After an object/object pronoun
- He asked me to help him with his assignment.
- I want my students to succeed.
5. To show purpose
- She went to the post office to buy stamps.
- They are saving their money to buy a new car.
