My name is Nooshi. I will be your teacher this semester. I want to tell you a little bit about myself. I was not born in the United States! I was born in England! My parents are from Iran but they lived in England for a few years when my father was studying in a college in England at that time. So, my brother and I were both born in England. When I was one year old, we went back to our country, Iran. I grew up in Iran. I lived there until I was 13 years old. I have many memories from my childhood. I spent a lot of time with friends and relatives. I played soccer with my brother and friends and rode my bicycle for fun.
When I was 13, I left Iran to come to the United States. My mother and brother were already living here. So, I started high school in California at that time. I went to two different high schools in Modesto, California. when I graduated from High School, I applied to U.C. Berkeley. I was very happy when I got accepted to U.C. Berkeley because it was my dream to go to college there. I started college at 17. It was all-new, exciting, and a little scary. At first, I wasn’t sure what major I wanted to study. I began with science and math classes. But soon I realized that I didn’t enjoy those subjects. After a couple of years of trying different classes, I discovered Sociology! I decided to major in Sociology and minor in English Literature. And I loved it!
After I finished my Bachelor’s degree, I went on to get a couple of Master’s Degrees at San Francisco State University. First, I studied Teaching English as a Second Language. Then, a couple of years ago, I went back and studied Equity and Social Justice in Education. It was wonderful to be a student again and it helped me understand my students' challenges as they work and go to school.
I have been teaching E.S.L. at Contra Costa College since 2001. I love my job! I have wonderful students from all over the world. And I learn a lot from my students; I learn about their cultures, ideas, and experiences. Every semester, I meet interesting people. And I love to see my students improve their English, feel more confident about themselves, and get closer to achieving their goals.
I am very happy to be your teacher this semester. And I hope we will have lots of fun and learn a lot in class together!
