    Exercise 35:  Rewrite the following sentences using as XXX as, please.

    1.  My car is the same length as my friend’s car.

     

    2.  Most streets are the same width as each other in Seattle.

     

    3.  Each book for this class is the same thickness as the others.

     

    4.  The college is the same distance from my house as it is from my friend Sara’s house.

     

    5.  One orange chair is the same weight as the other orange chairs.

     

    6.  My son Alex is the same height as my son André.

     

    7.  My office is the same size as my friend Roger’s office.

     

    8.  My table is the same height as your table.

     

    9.  One swimming pool is the same depth as another swimming pool.

     

    10.  Seattle and Portland are about the same size.

     

    11.  My friend Roger’s hair is the same length as my friend Doug’s hair.

     

    12.  The Space Needle is the same height as some office buildings in downtown Seattle.

     

    13.  My cat’s fur is soft.  My friend’s cat fur is soft.

     

    14.  I run slowly.  My friend runs slowly.

     

    15.  My sister is 5 feet tall.  My mother was 5 feet tall.

    The expression as XXX as can also be used with quantity expressions such as many, much, few, and little.

    Examples:

    I bought three books.  My friend bought three books.
    I bought as many books as my friend did.

    I ate two cheeseburgers.  My son ate two cheeseburgers.
    I ate as much food as my son did.  I ate as many cheeseburgers as my son did.

    I have two pens.  My friend has two pens.
    I have as few pens as my friend has.

    I only have two dollars.  My sister only has two dollars.
    I have as little money as my sister does.

    Exercise 36:  Combine the following sentences using as XXX as, please.

    1.  My sister has five dogs.  My friend has five dogs.

     

    2.  I drank a lot of water.  My friend drank a lot of water.

     

    3.  It rains a lot in Seattle.  It rains about the same in Portland.

     

    4.  My son Alex bought two shirts.  My son André bought two shirts.

     

    5.  I have 30 students.  Sara has 30 students.

     

    6.  I ate a dish of ice cream.  My son ate a dish of ice cream.

     

    7.  I read 100 pages of a book over the weekend.  My friend read 100 pages of the same book over the weekend.

     

    8.  You had a lot of homework.  My other class had the same amount of homework.

     

    9.  The temperature was 45 degrees today.  It was the same temperature yesterday.

     

    Exercise 37:  Combine the following sentences using not as XXX as, please.

    Examples:

    I speak clearly.  My son Alex doesn’t speak clearly.
    My son Alex doesn’t speak as clearly as I do.

    I sing well.  My son André doesn’t sing well.
    My son André doesn’t sing as well as I sing.

    1.  My wife walks slowly.  I don’t walk slowly.

     

    2.  Some students work carefully.  Other students don’t work carefully.

     

    3.  Old people drive attentively.  Young people don’t drive attentively.

     

    4.  My elder son eats very quickly.  My younger son eats very slowly.

     

    5.  Good students react obediently to teachers.  Bad students react poorly to teachers.

     

    6.  Some students write legibly.  Other students don’t write legibly.

     

    7.  My friend speaks sarcastically.  Another friend doesn’t speak sarcastically.

     

    8.  My son reads fast in Japanese.  He doesn’t read fast in English.

     

    9.  My sons swim very fast.  I swim slowly.

     

    10.  I can do mathematics quite accurately.  My wife makes many mistakes in math.

     

    11.  Athletes move gracefully.  I move awkwardly.

     

    12.  My wife cooks very well.  My younger son cooks very poorly.

     

    Exercise 38:  Combine these sentences with either the same XXX as, different from, or as XXX as, please.

    Examples:

    My shoes are brown.  Your shoes are brown.
    Your shoes are the same color as mine.

    The history of France is interesting.  The history of Iran is interesting.
    The history of France is as interesting as the history of Iran.

    1.  My sister speaks clearly.  I speak clearly.

     

    2.  My shoes are size 8.  My wife’s shoes are size 8.

     

    3.  My son Alex cleans the house poorly.  My son André cleans the house poorly.

     

    4.  Alex’s age is 30.  André’s age is 28.

     

    5.  My dog is quite beautiful.  My friend’s dog is also quite beautiful.

     

    6.  My car cost $3,200.  My friend’s car cost $5,280.

     

    7.  My friend’s garden is beautiful.  My garden is beautiful.

     

    8.  Roger speaks very good French.  I speak OK French.

     

    9.  The quality of my sweater is very good.  The quality of my friend’s sweater is also very good.

     

    10.  This exercise is very difficult.  The last exercise was very easy.

     

    11.  Vegetables are good for your health.  Candy is not good for your health.

     

    12.  I am 5 feet 7 ½ inches tall.  Ed is 5 feet 8 inches tall.
