    “Had To” Exercise

    Exercise 7:  Change the following sentences to the past.  You will need to change “time” words as well as the verbs.

    Example:  He must buy a new computer today because his old one broke down last night.

    He had to buy a new computer yesterday because his old one broke down the night before last.

    1.  We have to get some books for our son so that he can be ready for his classes.

     

    2.  My sister has to take her son to the hospital.

     

    3.  Students must do all their homework before they come to school in the morning.

     

    4.  Robert has to fix his brother’s car so that he can drive to school next week.

     

    5.  Children have to go to bed early so that they can be healthy.

     

    6.  I must pull out the weeds from my garden before I plant my seeds this spring.

     

    7.  You have to do a lot of homework this quarter.

     

    8.  The policeman on the corner has to direct traffic every morning this month.

     

    9.  The boys have to help their father move some furniture this weekend.

     

    10.  His mother must show him how to do his cook chicken tonight.

     

    11.  She has to buy a birthday present for her daughter next week.

     

    12.  My friend must wash his car this afternoon.

     

    13.  The boys’ mother has to cook dinner for her sons.

     

    Past Modal Exercise:  Should Have + Past Participle

    Exercise 8:  Consider the following situations and then tell what the people should or shouldn't have done, please.

    1.  The man lost all his money at the casino on slot machines.

     

    2.  The man's friend lent him some of money so that he could gamble again.

     

    3.  My car broke down on the highway because the engine was low on oil.

     

    4.  My brother lost his job because he argued with his boss and told his boss that he quit.

     

    5.  While I was driving to school, I saw an accident in which a man cut off another car while speeding.

     

    6.  My mother smoked all her life and died of lung cancer.

     

    7.  I borrowed $1,000 from my friend last year but I haven’t paid him back yet

     

    8.  Yesterday was my son's birthday, but I forgot it was his birthday.

     

    9.  Yesterday at work, my friend felt very bad because he had gotten drunk the night before and he had a very bad hangover.

     

    10.  I didn’t go to bed until late last night and now I am very tired.

     

    11.  My students didn't do their homework.

     

    12.  My son had an accident because he was texting while driving.

     

    13.  My son didn’t call home because he forgot his phone in his room.
