    Module II: Address

    模块二:地址

Scenario 2.1: An Dawei asks Li Ming where the IKEA store is located.

    AD:

    LM:

    AD:

    LM:

    IKEA 在哪儿?

    在二楼。

    电影院在几楼?也在二楼吗?

    不,电影院在五楼。

    zài

    to be located at

    哪儿

    nǎ'er

    where

    lóu

    floor of building, building

    also, too

    Note:

在 a verb, is commonly used with a place word as object to indicate the location. The pattern is:

    Subject + 在 + Place Word

    电影院 在 五楼。

(lit. “The movie theater is located on the fifth floor.”)

哪儿/哪里 a question word, is used to ask questions such as “Where is … (located)…?” The pattern is :

    Subject + 在 + Question Word

    电影院 在 哪儿?

(lit. “The movie theater is located at where”?)

二楼 means “the second floor.” To ask “Which floor…” we will use the expression 几楼 (Jǐ lóu, lit. “how many floors”).

也 an adverb, means “also, too.” In English, the word order of an adverb is very flexible, but in Chinese most of the adverbs are unmovable, and occur only before the verbs. The pattern is :

    Subject + 也 + Verb + Object

    电影院 也 在 二楼。

(lit. “The movie theater also is located on the second floor.”)

Moreover, adverbs can’t occur without following verbs in Chinese. To say “Me too,” we will say 我也是, rather than *我也。

Scenario 2.2: An Dawei calls the Quanjude Restaurant in Beijing to inquire about the address.

    AD:

    C:

    gate, door

    jiē

    street, road

    Note:

ADDRESS The order of the elements in a Chinese address is the same as the order of dates, from general to specific. The pattern is:

    Country + Province + City + District + Road + Number

Zhōngguó Guǎngdōng Shěng Guǎngzhōu Shì Tiānhé Qū Huá jiù Lù 43 hào

(lit. “China, Guangdong Province, Guangzhou City, Tianhe District,
