Note: 点 means “o’clock.” 几点 is the question word that is used to ask “What time…”? Here are some examples of clock times:
半 means “half”. 30 minutes is the half of one hour so 8:30 can be read as bā diǎn bàn or bā diǎn sānshí (fēn). 15 minutes is a quarter (kè ,刻) of one hour so 8:15 is also read as bā diǎn yí kè. |

Note: TIME-WHEN PHRASE Time-When phrases are phrases that indicate the point in time, like “two o’clock,” “today,” “this week,” “next year,” and so on. In Chinese, a Time-When phrase is usually placed before the verb, and sometimes can appear at the beginning of the sentence. Note that this word order is different from English, since in English time phrases are usually placed at the end of sentences. The pattern is: Subject + Time-When + Verb + Noun 我 八点半 去 学校。 (lit. “I at 8:30 go to school.”) There is another kind of time phrase, called a Time-Duration phrase, that indicates a period of time, such as “two hours,” “one day,” “a week,” “ one year.” Time-Duration will be introduced later. 一起 means “together.” As an unmovable adverb, 一起 only appears before the verb. The pattern is : Subject + Unmovable Adverb + Verb 我们 一起 去。 (lit. “We together go.”) |
