Cultural Notes
* أبو محمد
In the Arab culture, it is common to use the name of the father's oldest son instead of his real name. This is a common practice in Arab societies, mostly because it is tied to social norms and values. It shows respect for older children and honors their role as the oldest part of the family by giving them preference and priority.
Listening Activity:
Listen to Hana's presentation then answer the questions
Check Your Understanding
- Role-Play: Work with a partner and create a short dialogue about your family. Use the vocabulary and questions from the lesson.
- Ask about each other’s family members:
- مَن هٰذا؟ مَن هٰذه؟ (Who is this?)
- كَم أَخًا وَ أُخْتًا عِنْدَكَ؟ (How many brothers and sisters do you have?)
- Describe them briefly:
- أَخِي طَويل. أُخْتِي ذَكِيّة. (My brother is tall. My sister is smart.)
Switch roles so each of you asks and answers questions. Try to keep the conversation going for at least 3 exchanges each.
- Speaking Practice: Record Yourself:
- Using your phone or computer, record yourself reading a short paragraph in Arabic.
- Try to introduce yourself and talk about your family, using sentences like:
- اسمي _____ وأنا من _____.
- عندي أخٌ واحد وأختان.
- أبي يعمل _____ وأمي _____.
- Submit your recording to Canvas (or your LMS) under “Listening and Speaking Assignment: My Family”.
