    Learning Objectives

In this section, you will be able to:

    • Engage in a restaurant dialogue in Arabic by listening to a scripted conversation.
    • Identifying key food and drink vocabulary and responding appropriately to ordering questions.

    Dialog في المطعم

In this section, you will engage in a role play in a restaurant. This role play occurs in a restaurant where two customers interact with a waiter to order their meals. You will encounter realistic and culturally relevant language when dining out in Arabic-speaking contexts. The dialogue introduces key vocabulary related to food and drink, table utensils, and ways of cooking (e.g., grilled, boiled, fried).

In this dialogue, a family of four goes to "Ali Baba Restaurant" for lunch.
Nasser is the father, Huda is the mother, Sami is their young adult son, and Rana is their young adult daughter.
The family engages in a polite conversation with the waiter as they order their favorite drinks and meals using food-related vocabulary and appropriate expressions for requesting and asking.

Listen carefully to the audio dialogue, "Nasser, Huda, Sami, and Rana at the Restaurant." As you listen, follow along with the written text provided below.

    Check Your Understanding

    • Read these questions and write the answers in your notebook:
    • Pair up with a partner. One plays the role of the waiter, and the other plays one of the family members. Take turns ordering food and drink based on the vocabulary from the dialogue. Use polite expressions like:
      • من فضلك
      • لو سمحت
      • هل عندكم...؟
      • أريد...
    • Work with a partner. One of you will play the role of the waiter, and the other will be the customer at a restaurant.
    • Use the vocabulary and expressions from the lesson to have a short conversation:
      • Greet each other
      • Ask for the menu
      • Order drinks and food
      • Ask politely for something that is missing or clarify a request
      • End the conversation politely.
      • Then, switch roles and do the role play again.
    • Write 7–8 sentences about what you would order if you went to an Arabic restaurant. Be sure to include at least one drink, one main dish, and one polite phrase (like "من فضلك" or "شكراً"). Use vocabulary from the lesson to describe your meal. Try to use the present tense and full sentences.

Example: في المطعم العربي، أُريد أن أطلب...
