Introduction
In this chapter, you will learn clothing vocabulary, which is essential in daily conversations, whether you’re describing what you’re wearing, going shopping, or discussing styles with friends. By learning these words, you’ll gain the tools to talk about your personal style, describe what others are wearing, and understand cultural clothing differences. As you practice, think about your own clothing style and how you’d describe it in Arabic. This vocabulary will be useful in real-life situations, whether you’re shopping, asking about sizes, or simply chatting about fashion!

New Vocabulary
In this table, you will find vocabulary related to the chapter's theme. In each line, you can find the word in the singular and plural forms, if possible, meaning in English, the word in a sentence, and the audio for the new words in singular, plural, and the sentence. In addition, you hear the word's pronunciation in singular and plural forms from the audio in the dialog cards activity. Listen and repeat the Arabic pronunciation of the new Vocabulary. You should know that the new vocabulary will be integrated into the interactive contexts by scaffolding upon the previously learned vocabulary in earlier Arabic OERs.
Here are the new words you’ll be learning:

Describing Types of Clothing in Arabic
In Arabic, when we describe clothing, the adjective comes after the noun and agrees with it in gender (masculine or feminine), when the subject is a non-human plural, the adjective or predicate used to describe it takes the feminine singular form, regardless of the grammatical gender or number of the noun. Non-human plurals are treated as a collective group in Arabic. This grammatical feature simplifies agreement by treating the plural noun as a singular feminine entity.
For example:
- ملابس قطنية (cotton clothes) – The adjective قطنية (cotton) is feminine singular to match the non-human plural noun ملابس.
- حذاء رياضي (sports shoe) – The adjective رياضي (sports) is masculine to match the masculine noun حذاء.
- قبعة جلدية (leather hat) – The adjective جلدية (leather) is feminine to match the feminine noun قبعة.
Using these adjectives, we can label different types of clothing:
- ملابس رياضية (sports clothes)
- ملابس رسمية (formal clothes)
- ملابس تقليدية (traditional clothes)
- قميص قطني أبيض (a white cotton shirt)
- حذاء رياضي أسود (a black sports shoe)
- فستان تقليدي أزرق (a blue traditional dress)
- جاكيت جلدي بني (a brown leather jacket)
- حجاب قطن وردي (a pink cotton hijab)
- بلوزة رسمية بيضاء (a white formal blouse)
By practicing, you can describe a wide range of clothing items in Arabic accurately and clearly.

Check Your Understanding
- Choose five clothing items from magazines or the internet, create a digital or paper collage, and write a description in Arabic. Include adjectives and prepositions.
- Examples:
- في الصورة، يوجد جاكيت جلدي بني
- الحقيبة بجانب الحذاء الأسود
- أحب هذه الملابس لأنَّها رسميَّة
- Examples:
- With a partner, create and perform a shopping dialogue in Arabic. One student is the shopper, the other is the store clerk. Include the following:
- Greetings
- Asking about a specific item (color, size, type)
- Responding using vocabulary from the chapter
- Expressing preference using “أفضل” or “أريد”
- Example:
- الزبونة: مرحبًا، هل عندكم فساتين قطنية؟
- البائعة: نعم، لدينا فساتين قطنية بألوان مختلفة. ما هو مقاسكِ؟
- Write a short description of an outfit you wore or want to wear for an event. Use five clothing or accessory words, three adjectives, and 3 prepositions of placE
- Example:
- في الحفلة، لبست فستانًا أزرقَ طويلًا.
- لبست وشاحًا ورديًا فوق الفستان.
- كانت حقيبتي بجانب الباب.
- Example:
- Draw or digitally design your ideal outfit. Then write a paragraph (5–6 sentences) describing it in Arabic. Use vocabulary from the unit, including materials (e.g., cotton, leather), types (formal, traditional), and colors.
- Example: في فصلي المفضل، أحب أن ألبس قميصًا قطنيًا أبيضَ مع بنطلون جينز أزرق . ألبس حذاء رياضيًّا رماديًّا، وأحمل حقيبة جلدية سوداء.
- In groups, prepare a “mini fashion show” presentation in Arabic. Each student describes what a classmate is “wearing” using vocabulary and grammar from the chapter.
- Example:
- أحمد يلبس جاكيتًا بنيًا مع حزام أسود.
- تلبس ناديا قبعة شتوية وقفازات.
- Example:
- Look at the image of the young man. Write a short paragraph (5–6 sentences) describing what he is wearing in Arabic. Use the vocabulary you’ve learned in this unit. Include:
