You will have around two weeks to complete and submit your portfolio. To make the most of that time, think about how much time you need to devote to each of the following pieces of your portfolio, and make a schedule to help you stay on track.
For each of the three assignments you are revising, use this form to help you think through what changes to focus on.
Assignments to revise:
- Summary
- Summary-Response
- Research Paper
You will also need to compose a cover letter outlining how your writing has improved over the semester and how you approached your revision of each of the three assignments. You can choose to write the cover letter paragraph by paragraph as you revise each assignment, or you can compose the full cover letter after you have completed all revisions of your assignments.
STOP AND REFLECT 1: Reflecting on Past Writing
Discuss the following questions with your team.
- Which assignment(s) do you think will take the most work to revise?
- What revisions do you want to focus on for that assignment?
- How much time do you think it will take to revise?
- Which assignment(s) do you think will take the least work to revise?
- What revisions do you want to focus on for that assignment?
- How much time do you think it will take to revise?
- Which parts of the cover letter do you think will be the most challenging to write? Which parts will be the easiest?
- How long do you think you’ll need to complete the cover letter?
- Are you planning on working on your cover letter paragraph by paragraph or all at once? What do you think are the advantages of using this method? What are the challenges?
STOP AND REFLECT 2: Planning Your Portfolio
Think about how you’d like to approach compiling your portfolio and how much time you think you should spend on each assignment. Fill in the chart below.

B. Tips for Creating Your Portfolio Work Schedule
Following are some tips for making the most of your schedule:
- Review your responses to the Stop and Reflect activities above.
- How much time should you budget for each assignment?
- Which assignments will require more time?
- How are you planning to approach the cover letter: assignment by assignment, or all at once in the end?
- Consider your personal work habits and preferences. Would you prefer to tackle the most challenging assignment first? Get the easiest assignment out of the way before moving on to the others? Are you planning to take days "off" from working on your portfolio?
- Ask your instructor if any class sessions will be devoted to portfolio revision, and if specific assignments will be covered during each session.
- Check your calendar in other classes to make note of any major assignments that you might need to focus on while working on your portfolio, and don’t overschedule your portfolio work during those times.
- Include times when you’d like to sign up for office hours or schedule an appointment with the Writing Center, and follow through.
- Monitor your schedule and adjust as necessary. Make sure you’re giving yourself enough time to work on each assignment.
