6.4: Is Your Sentence a Run-On?

  • Does your sentence contain more than one independent clause? If no, you're good! If yes, Are the clauses joined with a comma and a coordinating conjunction? If yes, you're good! If no, Are the clauses joined by a semicolon? If yes, you're good! If no, Revise it quick! You have a run-on sentence.

    Example \(\PageIndex{1}\):

    Run-On Sentence: We’ve learned so much about grammar already how am I going to remember it all?

    Fix with a comma and conjunctions: We’ve learned so much about grammar already, and I’m worried about how I’m going to remember it all.

    Fix with a semicolon: We’ve learned so much about grammar already; how am I going to remember it all?
