    Depuis

    The word depuis helps you talk about: (1) how long you have been doing something until now; or (2) since when you have been doing something.

    (a) To say that something has been going on since a particular time or date in the past and continues into the present, use depuis + [time period, date, starting point]. The verb in this construction remains in the present tense:

    Elle étudie depuis 6h du matin. (She has been studying since 6 o'clock this morning.)

    Nous passons les étés au Portugal depuis 2015. (We have been spending our summers in Portugal since 2015.)

    (b) To say that something hs been going on for a certain amount of time until now, use depuis + [amount of time]:

    Je travaille à Paris depuis 10 ans. (I have been working in Paris for 10 years.)

    Elle habite à Carlsbad depuis quelques mois.  (She have been living in Carlsbad for a few months.)

    The expression Ça fait...que is often synonymous with [depuis + [amount of time]:

    Ça fait longtemps que je ne te vois pas. (I haven’t seen you in a long time.)

    Ça fait trois ans qu’on est ensemble. (We’ve been together for three years.)

    (présent +) depuis + quand, une date J'étudie depuis sept heures du matin. I have been studying since seven o'clock this morning.
    depuis que + passé composé Je n'ai pas étudié depuis que j'ai fini mon cours. I haven't studied since I finished my class.

    Note

    With the expressions venir de and depuis (and ça fait), we are talking about the past in relation to the present in 2 different ways:

    • what we just did now (with venir de) 
    • what we've been doing and are continuing to do into the present (with depuis).

    Il y a

    You have already learned to use the expression il y a to say there is, there are. In a different context, il y a means ago.

    To say that something happened some time ago in the past, use the formula: il y a + [time ago]:

    J’ai mangé il y a une heure. (I ate one hour ago.)

    Nous sommes arrivés en France il y a deux semaines. (We arrived in France two weeks ago.)

    Elle a visité Abidjan il y a quatre ans. (She visited Abidjan four years ago.)

    Pendant

    Pendant indicates the duration of an action or situation. To say that something happened for a particular period of time and ended in the past, use: pendant + [time period]:

    Valérie et Michelle ont joué au foot pendant 3 heures. (Valérie and Michelle played soccer for 3 hours.)

    Patrick et moi, nous avons étudié à Siena pendant deux semaines. (Patrick and I, we studied in Siena for two weeks.)

    It can also be used to talk about the present:

    Je fais du jogging tous les matins pendant 30 minutes. (I jog every morning for 30 minutes.)

    Note

    You have learned how to use venir de, depuis, pendant, and il y a to talk about the past in different ways. There are many more ways to do this. For example:

    Pour (for) is used to project how long a specific action or situation will last in the future. You can conjugate the verb in the present if you’re speaking about schedules, timetables. Pour is similar, and sometimes interchangeable with pendant.

    Je reste en Angleterre pour 5 jours. (I am staying in England for 5 days.)

    Dans indicates the start of a specific action or situation which will take place in the future.

    Je vais au Canada dans 3 jours. (I am going to Canada in 3 days.)

    En can be used to indicate the amount of time it takes to complete an action.

    J’ai fait mes devoirs en 1 heure. (I did my homework in 1 hour.)

    À is used to express the clock time at which an event occurs.

    J’ai rendez-vous à 10h. (I have an appointment at 10 o’clock.)

    Ça fait is a way of saying It’s been….(≈ since)

    Ça fait longtemps que je n’ai pas vu un bon film. (It’s been a longtime since I saw a good movie.)

    Here is a summary of the differences between depuis, il y a and pendant:

    pendant

    Pendant combien de temps est-ce qu'ils ont vécu à Grenoble ?
    Pendant combien de temps est-ce qu'ils ne se sont pas vus ?

    		 Ils ont vécu à Grenoble pendant 10 ans.
    Ils ne se sont pas vus pendant 2 ans.
